Alea Jacta - Tales Of Void And Dependence

Em bandas com mais de 20 anos de carreira é normal que o seu som se mantenha fiel às suas origens mas também as há que chegam a um (ou mais) pontos de viragem, independentemente dos motivos. Para além disso há outras que se moldam de modo a poderem acompanhar as diferentes fases ou estilos; vamos ver em qual destas se incluem os Espanhóis Alea Jacta e o seu novo trabalho “Tales Of Void And Dependence”.

Depois de um pequeno prólogo escutamos uma “Sense Of Loss” que parece pegar onde terminou o anterior “Enter The Chaos”, mantendo um ritmo death/thrash cheio de groove. “Anastrophe” já entra por caminhos mais técnicos, numa espécie de fusão entre death melódico e metalcore de constantes breakdowns com uma maior predominância para a voz limpa e com 2 riffs de nota, sendo o maior a ter início por volta do minuto 3 a merecer destaque pela técnica. “The Others In Us” volta a imprimir groove numa faixa maioritariamente mid-tempo mas com alternâncias up-tempo antes de um “Insight” que tem uma característica engraçada; baseando-se numa toada metalcore a banda junta-lhe um pouco de thrash e daí resulta algo menos insípido, mais alegre e com mais consistência. Em “Swimming With A Lead Jacket” mantêm-se em terrenos mais death/thrash com um toque de progressivo antes de “Your Presence” entrar downtempo até nivelar no death melódico de recortes mais modernos, novamente com o uso de 2 vozes, que faz com que esta seja uma das melhores faixas do álbum. Continuando no death melódico, “Searching For A New Self” belisca um pouco de progressivo antes de “Son” injetar groove no deathcore; “The Loop” escolhe o caminho para um metalcore mais direto e emocional, caminho esse que se transforma num deathcore para “Interdependence”, finalizando depois o álbum com “Hypsteria” na mesma toada mas com mais músculo e groove.

O que mais me agradou neste “Tales Of Void And Dependence” foi a forma como os Alea Jacta combinaram os diversos sub-géneros que são a sua base musical; pegaram na técnica do death, juntaram aquele toque punk presente no thrash mais direto e agressivo, adicionaram alguns pormenores mais técnicos/progressivos e uma grande dose de groove e com isso conseguiram mesmo dar algum fulgor às músicas mais marcadamente metalcore. O dado está lançado…

In bands with careers longer than 20 years it’s normal that their sound stays faithful to their origins but there are also the ones that reach to one (or more) turning points, no matter the reasons for it. Apart from that are others that shape itself so they can keep track of different phases and styles; let’s see in which of these fit Spanish Alea Jacta and their newest work “Tales Of Void And Dependence”.

After a short prologue we listen to a “Sense Of Loss” that seems to pick up where last “Enter The Chaos” ended, keeping a groovy death/thrash rhythm. “Anastrophe” goes into more technical ways in some sort of melodeath and metalcore fusion with constant breakdowns with more emphasis to the clean voice and 2 riffs worth mentioning, being the biggest to start around minute 3 to deserve highlight for its technique. “The Others In Us” imprints again some groove into a track mainly mid-tempo but with up-tempo changeovers before an “Insight” that has a funny characteristic; based in a metalcore pace add a little bit of thrash and the result is less dull, more joyful and consistent. In “Swimming With A Lead Jacket” the band keeps in more death/thrash terrains with a touch of progressive before “Your Presence” starts downtempo until levelling in a modern melodeath, again using 2 voices, which makes this to be one of the best tracks in the album. Continuing in melodeath, “Searching For A New Self” pinches progressive before “Son” injects groove in deathcore; “The Loop” choses a more direct and emotional metalcore, path that transforms into a deathcore for “Interdependence, afterwards ending the album with “Hypsteria” in the same pace but with more muscle and groove.

What pleased me the most in this “Tales Of Void And Dependence” was the way Alea Jacta combined the several sub-genres that make their musical base; picked death technique, added that punk touch present in a direct and aggressive thrash, added some technical/progressive details and a great dose of groove and with that managed even to give some glow to the tracks mainly metalcore.
