DareWolf - II-I

Today I’ve received an email about a new Portuguese project, DareWolf, who introduce themselves as a hard rock/power metal band. They’ve released a digital EP titled “II-I” and are now promoting it along with the video for the track “Freakshow” that you can see below.

Being a young band and with lots of influences it’s normal that they wish to show it all at once, so for now it’s difficult to “catalogue” their style. One minute we can be listening to a hard rock type “Freakshow” with chorus reminding the 80’s and soon after a ballad “Paraíso”, sang in Portuguese (is always applaudable) which brings back to memory Império dos Sentados. 6 are the tracks that make this work (the intro is very good, failing only in terms of sound linking with the rest because of what I’ve explained earlier) that make proof of the (good) influences this kids have; in the vocals Guga has a very distinguished voice, harsh but with melody, something that can be strange at first but soon ends up sounding well within their genre. It seemed to me that he showed some difficulties with the lower tones, improving as the tone rose; I leave the suggestion for them to work their melodies around that. Musically they’re also good with a strong approach to the 80’s in terms of percussion and synths; depending of the musical path they end up choosing we’ll see if it fits well.

Darewolf are young and starting their career but they show a lot of musical quality, on my point of view they just need to better define their route so afterwards, with the support of a capable studio, work on the mastering and present a more worked and refined sound. They have what it takes, just need to work on it...
