Quando três músicos com raízes musicais diferentes se juntam num novo projecto, é certo que o resultado vai ser uma mistura de sonoridades. Foi o que decidiram fazer Thorsten Eligehausen (Schandpfahl, Cradle Of Haze), Marc Vanderberg (Devil May Care) e Ken Pike, cujo resultado Eli Van Pike é um cruzamento entre o industrial, gótico/electro e rock.
Se bem que os estilos que referi se enquadram numa realidade similar, a verdade é que a forma como foram combinados neste projecto resultaram em músicas que se demarcam dos estereótipos, muitas vezes por pequenos pormenores. Por exemplo, logo a abrir a faixa “Made In Germany” tem aquela toada típica do industrial Alemão mas junta-lhe solos de guitarra que transportam a música para um som mais rock/metal, para além de ser cantada em Inglês o que lhe confere um ambiente diferente. Logo depois “Herzschlag” mantém a escolha do industrial mas empurra a faixa mais para baixo num estilo dark gótico com predominância para os teclados que lhe conferem um toque de electro rock. Como se todas estas alternâncias não fossem suficientes, “World On Fire” é claramente uma abordagem ao rock clássico enquanto que “Tears Of War” mistura industrial com electro gótico, fazendo-me lembrar Iggy Pop (não me perguntem porquê) na parte do refrão; para além disso é também uma das músicas do álbum que combina vocalizações em Inglês e Alemão, a par de “One Last Rose” e “Welcome To My Dark Side”. As restantes músicas do álbum mantém a mescla de sons com especial predominância para o industrial, com maior ou menor peso nas guitarras, terminando numa acústica “Valentine’s Day” com uma sonoridade folk Irlandês.
Esta junção de diferentes culturas e sonoridades criou uma harmonia interessante, resultando em composições com peso, bem estruturas e melódicas. O uso das vocalizações alternadas, dentro e em cada música, permitiu criar ambiências adequadas aos géneros escolhidos. “Welcome To My Dark Side” é um bom trabalho de estreia, apesar de não ser de consumo imediato; é preciso uma escuta mais atenta e interessada para se poder retirar dele todo o seu valor.

When three musicians with different backgrounds decide to get together for a new project, the result will certainly be a blend of sonorities. That was what Thorsten Eligehausen (Schandpfahl, Cradle Of Haze), Marc Vanderberg (Devil May Care) and Ken Pike decided to do, whose result Eli Van Pike is a mixture between industrial, electro goth and rock.
Although the styles I’ve mentioned fit themselves in the same reality, the truth is that the way they were combined in this project ended up in musics that apart themselves from the stereotypes, mostly because of the little details. For instance, the opening track “Made In Germany” has that typical German industrial pace but adds some solo guitars which lead the music into a more rock/metal sound besides being sang in English which grants it a different ambiance. Right after, “Herzschlag” keeps the industrial but pushes the track further down into a dark goth with prevalence for the keyboards that provides an electro rock touch. As if all of this changes weren’t enough, “World On Fire” is clearly a more classic rock approach while “Tears Of War” mixtures industrial with electro goth reminding me Iggy Pop (don’t ask me why) in the chorus; besides that it’s also one of the songs that blends English and German vocals, same as “One Last Rose” and “Welcome To My Dark Side”. The remaining songs keep the mixture of sonorities with more prevalence to industrial, with more or less weight in the guitars, ending in an acoustic “Valentine’s Day” with Irish folk sonority.
This combination of different cultures and sonorities created an interesting harmony resulting in compositions with weight, well structured and melodic. The use of alternate vocalizations, inside and through each music, made it possible to create adequate ambiances to the chosen genres. “Welcome To My Dark Side” is a good debut although not for immediate consumption; it’s necessary a more thorough and interested listening to perceive all it’s value.
