Davi: First of all, let me thank you for the opportunity you gave me to talk to you and let everybody know more about Tothem. So let’s start with the basics, why the name Tothem?
Tothem: The band's name
has a double meaning. The word Tothem makes you think about something magical,
mystic and powerful, just like we want our music to be. Then, Tothem because
all we do is dedicated to them, to our fans; that is the reason why we work so
hard every day.
Davi: When did you
start as a band?
Tothem: Tothem were
formed in 2001 in Rome but we achieved stability only three years ago, after
Andrea and Marco joined the band (Black Cyril and Roslen, founder members, and
Leo were already in). We were finally ready to start again; indeed, we have
released a five tracks Ep (Osaka bed & breakfast) and our first full length
(Beyond The Sea) in a few months. The Ep was very important to us to test the
ground, but Beyond The Sea was the very first step of our career as a band.
Davi: And in your debut
album you tried to send a message?...
Tothem: The album has a
precise message and everybody can see themselves through it. What we wanted to
talk about is a journey, both physical and emotional, by a stormy sea.
Sometimes we feel like the ship of the image of the album's cover. We often go
through hard times and usually keep within us all the sorrow, while we should
"break the glass" and get the storm away.
Davi: Not always an
easy task…
Tothem: Of course it is
never easy, but that's life and we must accept we're not invincible and
everybody can fall.
Davi: You only got some
attention with the album or it started earlier?
Tothem: With the
release of the Ep, we immediately got a great success amongst foreigner
listeners and approvals from the critics. This has let us tour some countries
in Europe. We've been in Romania, England and Germany and we'll be soon touring
Romania again. The first album has just confirmed to us that our music is very
accessible even to people who don't usually listen to metal music. Therefore, we
can say we reached a good balance of heavy riffs, pounding drums and nice
melodies. We surely did a great work that caught the attention of the best
labels in the world.
Davi: That’s great, having all that recognition from the start. But why did you choose Maple Metal Records?
Davi: That’s great, having all that recognition from the start. But why did you choose Maple Metal Records?
Tothem: We chose to
work with Maple Records because they showed us seriousness and absolutely
trusted us. We'll see what this partnership may bring. And we don't want to
stop here!
Davi: By that, you mean
new stuff, right?
Tothem: Indeed we are
already working on new material for the next album. We've got some interesting
ideas and we feel this is going to be a great work and won't let our fans down,
that's a promise.
Davi: We are getting
closer to the end of this conversation; do you want to leave any message to the
public?
Tothem: We want to thank you and everyone who has always been by our side, who has pushed us beyond the boundaries and always supported us. It's very important to a band to see the positive feedback from the audience, as much as to get positive reviews from journalists and experienced listeners. You can't even imagine how sweet it is to get enthusiastic message from people from all over the world.
Davi: Again, thank you
for this moment. And I hope to see you on stage in Portugal soon.
:D
