Grimlet - Theia: Aesthetics of a Lie

Uma das bandas que mais deu que falar a nível de underground nacional, na primeira década deste século, foram os Grimlet. Depois do trabalho de estreia “Darkness Shrouds the Hidden” e do seguidor “Grim Perceptions”, que lhes valeram o merecido destaque, em 2011 a banda cessa funções por tempo indeterminado… até agora; 2017 trás com ele “Theia: Aesthetics Of A Lie”, terceiro trabalho da banda.

Depois de ouvir uma primeira vez este álbum a ideia com que fico é de que a sonoridade da banda está mais pesada, mais negra. Logo no instrumental “El Gran Dark Maestrum” as guitarras pesadas e arrastadas puxam o ouvinte para terrenos sombrios, abrindo caminho para uma toada black/thrash em “Scorching Vision” que, apesar de manter uma linearidade sonora sem grandes diversificações ao longo dos mais de oito minutos da sua duração, agarra bem o ouvinte muito por força do riff e da bateria pujante. A faixa que dá título ao álbum “Aesthetics Of A Lie”, apesar de ter um pendor thrash, à semelhança da anterior depende muito das guitarras para fazer a diferença aqui salientado também o solo. “2:1:0” e “Still Beneath The Horns” mantém-se na linha de todo o álbum com as alternâncias entre o death e o thrash, apresentando os solos mais longos e elaborados de todos. O álbum termina com “Knee-Deep In The Dead”, thrash com requintes de death.

Este regresso dos Grimlet é recebido com entusiasmo pois o seu contributo para a cena underground não deve ficar presa no passado recente. “Theia: Aesthetics Of A Lie” não se revela um portento musical mas cumpre bem o seu papel, deixando no ar a ideia de que a banda, para além de maturidade, ganhou peso nas suas composições sem deixar a essência do som que a caracterizou; um bom regresso que se pode revelar auspicioso para a banda.

One of the bands that became the talk in national underground during this century’s first decade were Grimlet. After the debut “Darkness Shrouds the Hidden” and sophomore “Grim Perceptions” that granted them the well deserved prominence, the band terminates his duties in 2011 for an indefinite period… until now; 2017 brings “Theia: Aesthetics Of A Lie”, band’s third release.

After listening to this album for the first time I get the feeling their sonority is heavier and darker. Right on the instrumental track “El Gran Dark Maestrum” the heavy and dragged guitars pull the listeners into gloomy grounds, opening ways to a black/thrash pace in “Scorching Vision” which, although it maintains a sonorous linearity without major variations along its more than eight minutes length, grabs the listener mainly because of the riff and the vigorous drums. “Aesthetics Of A Lie”, the track that entitles the album, although it’s more into thrash just like the previous one it very much depends on the guitars to make the difference, also with an highlight to the solo. “2:1:0” and “Still Beneath The Horns” keep themselves within the album baseline with the variations between death and thrash, presenting the longest and most elaborated solos of all songs. The album ends with “Knee-Deep In The Dead”, thrash with death refinements.

This Grimlet comeback is received with enthusiasm because their contribution to the underground scene shall not be stuck in a recent past. “Theia: Aesthetics Of A Lie” is not a marvelous album but plays is roll well, leaving the idea that the band, besides being more mature, has also gained height in the compositions without deriving too much apart from their characteristic sound; a good comeback that can reveal promising to them.
