Quatro faixas num total de 43 minutos… não sendo incomum no reino do Black Metal faixas tão longas fica mais difícil catalogar “Fallow Fields” como MD ou LP. Não que isso interesse muito, foi apenas uma observação, acho mais importante esmiuçar as 4 faixas que o compõem.
A primeira faixa tem sempre aquele condão de precursora, dando ao ouvinte o mote para as que se seguem. “Pathways” faz isso e muito mais; com uma duração de 14:21 (a maior das 4 faixas) engloba um pouco da essência da banda e do que se propõe a mostrar. Começando com uma toada Folk instrumental, subitamente acelera e faz-se acompanhar pela voz de Ian, decrescendo novamente de intensidade numa nova parte instrumental voltando depois ao uso da voz, desta feita limpa. Esta intermitência rítmica sente-se ao longo de todo o trabalho e desperta no ouvinte sentimentos díspares. “Through The Grey” repete a “mistura” da anterior, desta feita iniciando numa vertente mais Folk Medieval que depois, juntamente com as vozes, molda-se num Black Folk que acaba por terminar num Drone sem antes não deixar de passar por um Post Progressivo. É fantástica a forma como Ian consegue criar alternâncias entre estilos dentro da mesma música sem que esta perca a sua essência. “Fallow Fields” é quase que a antítese de todas as outras faixas; com uma sonoridade NeoFolk semi-acústica, leva o ouvinte a divagar mentalmente por idílicas paisagens ao som de uma voz limpa e melódica. A última faixa “Awake Before The Dawn” continua onde ficou a anterior, baixando ainda mais o ritmo para levar o ouvinte a um estado de dormência que funciona como uma catarse, trazendo-o depois de volta debaixo de uma descarga eléctrica.
Mais do que um álbum conceptual, este trabalho reúne variados estilos e elementos bem equilibrados, capazes de fazer as delícias dos amantes da música, seja ela qual for; é também um registo que, apesar de curto, apresenta corpo e essência que dá a sensação de ser muito maior. Este é daqueles trabalhos que recomendo a todos.

Four tracks with a total length of 43 minutes… not being uncommon such long tracks in the realm of Black Metal makes it hard to label “Fallow Fields” as an MD or LP. Not that it makes a difference, just an observation, find it more important to go through the 4 tracks which make up the album.
The first track has always that gift of precedence, giving the listener the motto for the following ones. “Pathways” does it and more; with a length of 14:21 (the biggest of them all) sums a little of the band essence and what are its intentions. Beginning with an instrumental Folk tune, suddenly it fastens and it is accompanied by Ian’s voice, decreasing again its intensity in another instrumental part, returning afterwards to the use of vocals, this time clean. This intermittence in the rhythm is noted in all tracks and awakens unequal senses in the listeners. “Through The Grey” repeats the previous “mixture”, this time starting with a more Medieval Folk approach that, combined with the voices, shapes into a Black Folk that ends in a Drone, not without first passing through a Post Prog. It’s fantastic the way Ian can interchange between different styles within the same song but maintaining the same essence. “Fallow Fields” is almost the antitese of the other tracks; with a semi-acoustic NeoFolk sonority, takes the listener to mentally digress by idyllic passages guided by a clean melodic voice. Last track “Awake Before The Dawn” continues where the previous one left, gradually slowing down the rhythm and taking the listener into a dormant state that works as a catharsis, bringing him back afterwards under an electrical discharge.
More than a conceptual album, this work gathers different styles and elements well balanced, capable of delighting music lovers, whichever the genre; it is also a record that, despite short, presents body and essence that gives the sensation of being bigger that it is. This is one of those works I trully recommend.
