Heyoka's Mirror - Loss Of Contact With Reality

Formados em 2015, os Heyoka’s Mirror são uma banda de Calgary, Alberta, Canadá que recentemente lançou o seu primeiro EP “Loss of Contact With Reality”. São assumidamente uma banda de metal progressivo com influências notórias de Dream Theater.

“Loss of Contact with Reality” é constituído por três temas: “Face of Void”, “Time Manager” e “Chronovisor”. De uma forma geral, os três temas são imbuídos de riffs poderosos e musculados que conseguem pôr qualquer um a abanar a cabeça (e começam muito bem), mas logo se verificam algumas questões estruturais. Como qualquer trabalho progressivo que se digne, os temas deste EP são compostos a partir de diferentes partes e detêm uma dinâmica muito interessante mas, talvez por ser o primeiro trabalho deste trio, nota-se alguma desorganização entre elas e as passagens por vezes tornam-se pouco naturais, quase como se de uma colagem se tratasse, o que acaba por ter influência na dinâmica da melodia. Ainda que seja um traço da personalidade musical da banda a progressão perde por não ser mais fluída; o mesmo se passa a nível rítmico, com a banda a ter que trabalhar melhor a estrutura. De destacar a voz de Andrew Balboa, que tem não só uma boa voz limpa mas que se revela também capaz de guturais potente; de destacar também os solos de guitarra, estão bem conseguidos.

O que mais me apraz neste EP são mesmo os riffs, que conseguem agarrar o ouvinte e mantê-lo interessado, apesar da longa duração dos temas (algo normal no progressivo). Este trio mostra qualidades, apenas precisa de limar algumas arestas e trabalhar mais a mecânica da composição para então mostrar todo o seu real valor.

Starting in 2015, Heyoka’s Mirror are a band from Calgary, Alberta, Canada that recently released their debut EP “Loss of Contact With Reality”. They are clearly a progressive metal band with notorious influences from Dream Theater.

“Loss of Contact with Reality” has three tracks: “Face of Void”, “Time Manager” and “Chronovisor”. Basically, these three tracks are filled with powerful strong riffs that can make anyone to start headbanging (and they start very well), but we can immediately point out some structural issues. Has any progressive work worth mentioning, the songs are created from different bases and attain a very interesting dynamic but, probably because this his their debut, we can perceive some disorganization between them and sometimes the passages don’t work out that well, almost as if in an unnatural way, like some type of collage which ends up reflecting in the dynamics of the melody. Even if it’s a band’s musical personality trait the progression lacks in fluency; same goes for the rhythm, with the band needing to work on the structure. As highlight the voice of Andrew Balboa who has not only a good clean voice but it reveals the capability of releasing powerful growlings; also to highlight the guitar solos, very well arranged.

What pleases me most in this EP are the riffs that can grab the listener and keep him interested, despite the tracks length (something normal in progressive). This trio shows qualities, they just need to enhance certain points and work more the mechanics of musical composition to better show their real valor.
