Impera - Weightless

Em 2012 Lisboa viu formar-se um novo coletivo que se inspirava em várias vertentes/estilos musicais e combinava-os de forma a que o resultado fosse seu, numa tentativa de equilíbrio sonoro acompanhado por um lirismo muito próprio. O resultado desse esforço apresenta-se sob a forma de “Weightless”, o álbum de estreia dos Impera.

Apesar dos díspares elementos que formam as composições das 9 faixas deste “Weightless” nota-se um maior pendor para o death melódico contrabalançado com um groove sempre presente (mesmo que por vezes de forma ténue). Este é um estilo que só por si não é tão direto mas os Impera acrescentam ainda uma grande dose de técnica, elevando a fasquia até próximo do death técnico com toques de progressivo. Para aquelas faixas mais “simples” optam por uma abordagem mais próxima do thrash e aqui e ali incluem pormenores que mostram quais as suas fontes de inspiração (a faixa “Weightless” tem uma entrada inspirada em “Alison Hell” dos Annihilator). Liricamente centram-se na sociedade atual e nos seus problemas políticos, económicos e sociais, apontando o dedo a alguns pilares da fundação da sociedade moderna e a formas de estar/pensar.

Todos estes pontos estão bem estruturados no álbum em termos de concepção ao mesmo tempo que deixam ainda espaço para algumas ideias “out of the box”, como por exemplo o início de “Sisyphean Task” (e do álbum) em fade in ou uma “Grasp” marcadamente progressiva. No fundo, este trabalho acaba por ir de encontro à arte-de-capa (escultura da autoria de Daniel Castro Gamelas) com a personificação de uma sociedade fraturada e segura por costuras que a qualquer momento podem rebentar. Em termos musicais, mostra uma banda com qualidade técnica e sem receio de arriscar para além do óbvio.

Back in 2012 Lisbon saw the making of a new band that got inspired by different musical aspects/styles and combined them in a way that the result was their own, in an attempt of sound balance accompanied by unique lyrics. The result from that effort presents itself on the form of “Weightless”, Impera’s debut album.

Although the varied elements that mould this “Weightless” we can notice a bigger tendency for melodeath counterbalancing with an always present groove (even if subtle sometimes). Just by itself this style is not a direct one but nevertheless Impera add it a great dose of technique, raising the bar closer to a technical death with touches of progressive. For the more “simple” tracks they opt for a thrash approach and here and there add details that show some of their inspiring sources (the track “Weightless” has an intro inspired by Annihilator’s “Alison Hell”). Lyrically they focus on modern society and its political, economical and social problems, pointing the finger to some pillars of modern society foundations and ways of thinking/being.

All these points are well structured in the album in terms of conception although at the same time giving space for more “out of the box” ideas, like for instance the beginning of “Sisyphean Task” (and the album) in fade in or a markedly progressive “Grasp”. In the end, this work ends up meeting with the cover artwork (sculpture by Daniel Castro Gamelas) with a personification of a fractured society held by stitches that can burst at any time. In musical terms, it shows a band with technical quality and without fear to risk beyond the obvious.
