Interviewing Hugo Ribeiro from Godvlad

No ativo desde 2006, os Godvlad contam já com 3 trabalhos editados: “Godvlad" (2011 - digital), “Bipolar” (2014 - digital) e o mais recente “Dark Streets of Heaven” (2016 - digital/CD). 10 anos de atividade são sempre um marco importante em qualquer banda; por esses e outros motivos que irão perceber nas linhas abaixo é tempo de conversar com Hugo Ribeiro sobre o novo trabalho da banda, a sua música e o panorama musical em geral.

Davi: Olá Hugo, obrigado por te disponibilizares para uma pequena conversa.

Hugo: Olá Davi, obrigado eu pela oportunidade.

D: “Dark Streets of Heaven” é, sem qualquer dúvida, o vosso melhor registo. Não no sentido de inovador mas de maturidade musical. Estou certo?

H: É sempre subjectivo, mas sim, concordo que há mais maturidade neste ultimo trabalho e ainda bem. Espero que possamos fazer sempre melhor em cada edição. É sempre sinal de evolução. Mas o que é mais importante para nós é que sejamos sempre honestos em tudo o que fazemos. Isso sim, é o que conta mais para nós.

D: Depois de 2 longa-duração, um EP… porque não outro longa-duração? Ou este trabalho é apenas uma antecâmara?

H: Queríamos mostrar algo novo e fresco, juntámos 6 musicas que achámos especiais, cada uma à sua maneira e decidimos lança-las num formato mais pequeno. Já temos o próximo longa-duração composto que verá a luz do dia em 2017.

D: Os vossos anteriores trabalhos apenas estão disponíveis em formato digital. Estão a pensar disponibilizá-los também em suporte físico? Na minha opinião deveriam fazê-lo, tem qualidade para tal.

H: Sim, vamos voltar á estrada este ano e deveremos ter todos os nossos registos em formato físico. Visto que estivemos alguns anos fora dos palcos, não se justificava ter os álbuns nesse formato.

D: O vosso som baseia-se numa dinâmica metal (death)/gótico, a verdade é que as bandas que optam pela vertente mais gótica têm mais dificuldade de projeção. Problemas de mentalidade nacional ou falta de aposta dos media?

H: Acho que nem uma nem outra. O gótico tem um nicho de mercado mais reduzido e isso influencia a projeção de qualquer banda do género. O que é engraçado é que não considero Godvlad uma banda gótica; sim, pode ter influências mas acho que não é a vertente mais forte. Qualquer das formas, julgo que se houver perseverança e honestidade no produto, mais cedo ou mais tarde consegue-se furar mais além.

D: Em termos de concertos promocionais, um deles será na 1ª Edição do Vagos Metal Fest. Atendendo a todos os desenvolvimentos que antecederam a criação deste evento, este será de afirmação. Nervosos por fazerem parte desse arranque?

H: Nem é uma questão de nervos, mas sim, uma sensação de responsabilidade enorme por sermos a primeira banda Aveirense/local a estrear neste festival (contando com os outros VOA anteriores). Esperamos estar à altura! :)

D: Futuro próximo dos Godvlad, como o qualificas? Podemos esperar uma presença mais assídua da banda nos palcos nacionais (ou até mesmo internacionais)?

H: O futuro de Godvlad será estar mais presente nos palcos além de tentar compor sempre trabalhos cada vez melhores e mais competentes. Progredir como banda e tentar chegar ao máximo número de pessoas possível. Pelo menos, é esse o objectivo. :D
A nível internacional, isto já é uma questão mais complicada mas o tempo o dirá!

D: Mais uma vez, obrigado por despenderes um pouco do teu tempo. Esta última “questão” é inteiramente da tua responsabilidade; o palco é teu, faz ouvir.
H: Obrigado eu pelo apoio e pela oportunidade. Para quem quer seguir Godvlad, sigam o Facebook da banda. Lá terão tudo o que é novidades. E por fim, apoiem as bandas nacionais. Temos bandas de grande qualidade neste país pequeno e sem apoio dos fãs, as bandas não conseguem sobreviver. Isso inclui, ir aos concertos e ajudar por comprar merch. E para quem tem a mentalidade que só o que vem de fora é que é bom, parem imediatamente com essa ideologia. Obrigado a todos.

Davi: Hello Hugo, thank you for having the time to a little chitchat.

Hugo: Hello Davi. I thank you for the opportunity to do so.

D: “Dark Streets of Heaven” is, without a doubt, your best record. I’m not talking about being innovator but in terms of musical maturity. Am I correct?

H: It’s always subjective but yes, I do agree that there’s more maturity in this work and that’s a good thing. Really hope we can excel ourselves at each release. That’s a sign of evolution. But what’s more important to us is to be honest in everything we do. That’s what we value the most.

D: After 2 LP an EP… why not another LP? Or this work is just an antechamber?

H: We wanted to show something fresh and new so we picked up 6 songs that everyone thought, in their own way, it could be special and decided to release them in a smaller format. We already have our new LP ready and it will be released next year.

D: Your previous works are only available digitally. Are you thinking in releasing them in physical CD as well? In my opinion I do believe you should, they have lots of quality.

H: Yes, we are hitting the stages again this year and we should be able to have all our records in CD. Since we have been away from the stages for quite some time it didn’t made sense to have them recorded earlier.

D: Your sonority is based in a metal (death)/goth duality, the truth is that bands who choose a more goth approach tend to be less known. It’s a national scene mentality issue or just lack of support from the media?

H: I do believe neither one. Goth as a small based group of fans and that influences every band projection in the scene. The funny thing is that I don’t consider Godvlad to be a goth band; yes, there might be some influences but that’s not the strongest aspect. Either way I do believe that with perseverance and honest work, sooner or later we can go further beyond.

D: About promotional gigs, one of them will be in 1st Edition of Vagos Metal Fest. Keeping in mind all that surrounded and led to this event, this one will be of statement. Nervous for being part of this start up?

H: It’s not a question of being nervous but yes, we do feel a sense of enormous responsibility for being the first local/district band to play there (including the previous editions of VOA). He hope to be up to the task! :)

D: Godvlad’s near future, how would you describe it? Can we expect a more assiduous presence in our stages (and international)?

H: In the future Godvlad will have more stage appearances besides writing better and more capable works. To progress as a band and reach out as more fans as possible. At least that’s our goal. :D

D: Again, thank you for spending some of your time. This one last “question” is of your entire responsibility; the stage is yours, make yourself heard.
