Laurus Nobilis Music Fest 2017 - Day 2

The second day of Laurus Nobilis, dedicated to more extreme sonorities, started sunny and appealing for some bears; a sort of preparation for what was yet to come, a reunion of metalheads from North to South and Spain in a very cheerful and lively gathering with lots of beer…

Stucker were in charge of opening with their speedy and aggressive thrash. Although the lack of audience close to the stage (the crowd prefered to keep themselves shadowed probably to prevent the beer to evaporate…) the band gave a good gig; with only one EP in the discography soon we’ll have some new material and by what we saw it will be good.

From Guimarães came Skinning to show their death metal old school. The setlist focused mainly on the band’s last work “Slaves Of Insanity”, played for a fearless crowd that was gently getting closer to the stage. Suffered gig due to the Sun hitting directly the stage forcing the band to a bigger wear but not enough to wane their spirits.

Galicians In.Verno debuted in Portugal in festival format with a high quality gig, gaining compliments from many of the ones there including other band’s members. Laurus’ gig was part of the promotional tour for the debut “The Reasonable Choice Of Insanity”, a work that sounds as a mix of symphonic metal and Gothic but with weight and modernity. All of them were well on stage playing with joy and will, with an highlight for Eli whose voice fits perfectly on the sound they play and with a strong stage presence, closing in style Palco Revelações stage. Being this only their second visit to Portugal I leave notice here for the less attentive promoters for further acts in open air format or closed room, it’s surely a band to take into account.

Groove, fun and tenacity are adjectives that sum up thrashers Final Mercy opening act of Palco Principal. With a new album named “Revival”, four years after “Hometown” and with new vocals, the band appeared determined in showing all attending this new record combined with quality performance.

Also with a new work called “Flesh Upon The Feelings” Urban War gave an energetic show (as usual) with a restless Márcio constantly wandering the stage. Last time I saw them was back in 2013 and in comparison they seemed well and in a good period; next August 4th I’ll have the chance to watch them again.

Again with Ernesto on the vocals after a short absence with the place being filled by Miguel Inglês, Heavenwood gave another great show for a well attended audience. Although their last work “The Tarot of the Bohemians” is relatively recent the concert managed to cover songs from “Redemption”, “Swallow” and “Diva”, that way pleasing older fans like me and showing the ones ones the differences in the band’s sonority now and then. Celebrating 21 years, Heavenwood showed freshness and vitality, good signs for what’s up to come.

Time now for the headliner, Finnish band Amorphis, to get on stage for everyone’s delight. Now with a crowded precinct (many came only to see them) Tomi Joutsen and company started parading hits like “Sampo”, “Against Widows” or “My Kantele”, covering most of the band’s discography such as “Tales from the Thousand Lakes”, “Elegy” or “Magic & Mayhem - Tales from the Early Years”, leaving “Death of a King” and “Black Winter Day” for the encore. Were nearly 90 minutes of sheer delight for the ones attending that, me included, are already thinking when will the next opportunity be to see them.

Closing this 2nd day of the event got up on stage death grinders Holocausto Canibal; celebrating their 20th anniversary and with a new album (“Catalepsia Necrótica: Gonorreia Visceral Reanimada”) started the dancing time which went on until 2:30 a.m.. Although the late hour many were the ones relentlessly standing there; the noite would continue until around 5H00 a.m. at the sound of António Freitas setlist.
