Metalwings - For All Beyond

When we hear about symphonic metal with female vocals, even if we haven’t heard anything almost immediately our thoughts takes us to bands such as Nightwish or Within Temptation, among others, because they were or the precursors or iconic in the genre. This tendency ends up wrongly restricting the bands that try to be successful in this style impairing their influences demarcating. Fortunately there are those that can present enough arguments to stand out; one of those cases are Bulgarians Metalwings that recently released their debut album “For All Beyond”.

This project, born from the mind of Stela Atanasova with the purpose of combining classical music and several melodic metal styles, since early days attracted attentions especially at the time of the video release for the song “Crying For The Sun”, bonus track of the debut EP “Fallen Angel In The Hell”. Provided with all the support and hype that gathered around them, the live concerts happened one after the other as well as interviews that inevitably led to this release that I’ve decided to write about.

In all the symphonic writings we have a necessary intro whether long or short and in this case it wasn’t any different. “End Of The War” gives the motto in an epic tune for what we can listen in this work, melodies of fine contour and operatic voice not lacking heaviness in the right dose not to let the songs embark in a melancholic lethargy nor exacerbate beyond what’s designated. Besides vocals Stela also plays electric viola that can be listened in (but not only) “Secret Town”, that ends up staying “neutral” not attaching to a Celtic metal approach at the same time it creates its own sound identity. “Immortal Metal Wings” is one of the tracks taken from the previous EP with a more symphonic power metal pace and a chorus that gets inspired by more classic bands but with a distinctive mark that can be noticed in the arrangements and in the global structure of the song. “When We Pray” is a two voice symphonic ballad highly influenced by Within Temptation on their most “celtic” phase, by the time of “Mother Earth” album; “A Wish” is a more uptempo song interspersed with a melodic rock slope, probably the best song to better characterize Metalwings’ sound. “There’s No Time” in another song that seems inspired by Within Temptation but in a musical logic that includes Epica and Stream Of Passion, some sort of melodic lyrics with grandiose musicality. “For All Beyond” is another beautiful love dialogue between Stela and Max Morton, here in a more epic pace before “Realms Of Dreams”, another uptempo track with an epic power metal approach. With the ballad Tujni Serza” (“Sad Hearts”) sang in Bulgarian I do believe the album experiences a separation, like in a concert where the bands leave to return afterwards for an encore; this works ends with another track taken from the EP, “Fallen Angel In The Hell”, as well as two orchestrated versions for the songs “For All Beyond” and “Fallen Angel In The Hell”.

Metalwings’ greatest work lies in the way they structure the compositions; picking in the essence of symphonic music they added characteristics from the several rock/metal melodic sub genres, yet without pushing to much for one side nor the other. Is that balance that grants them distinction in a scene were many bands easily get lost by getting too attached to what has already been done rather then trying to be themselves. With a little bit of luck they might as well join the list of bands (have) highlight(ed) on the scene.
