Isto de receber dezenas de emails com material para escutar faz com que muita coisa se perca por falta de tempo ou por simples desatenção, mas por outro lado dá-me também a oportunidade de ter contacto com lançamentos fantásticos, como neste caso em concreto o de “Mike LePond’ Silent Assassins”.
Mais conhecido de todos pelo seu trabalho como baixista nos Norte-Americanos Symphony X, Mike aparece aqui com o seu álbum de estreia a solo e conta com a colaboração de Michael Romeo (Symphony X) na guitarra, Alan Tecchio (Hades / Watchtower / Seven Witches) na voz e "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (Halford / Testament / Sebastian Bach) na guitarra, ficando ele a cargo do baixo e da guitarra rítmica. Dito isto nem sei por onde começar com tanta coisa boa para dizer! Bom, em termos vocais Alan é soberbo, com a sua voz forte e melódica capaz de alcançar picos de agudos, é um misto de Rob Halford, Tim Owens e Bruce Dickinson. Os solos de guitarra, repartidos entre "Metal" Mike e Michael Romeo, são do outro mundo com ambos a mostrarem virtuosismo e mestria. O lirismo versa sobre temas mitológicos, históricos e da literatura, acompanhado por estruturas musicais que abrangem subgéneros do metal que vão do folk ao clássico, épico, power e heavy. Quem pensava que Mike ia fazer “mais do mesmo” a solo, mantendo uma vertente neoclássica e progressiva que o caracteriza enganou-se; a aposta é totalmente power metal e heavy metal clássico. Aliás, basta ouvirmos “Apocalypse Rider” a abrir o álbum para sermos logo atingidos por uma onda de revivalismo e nostalgia da época áurea do metal. Mas este trabalho vai mais além disso, congregando em si a essência dos clássicos: uma bateria que por vezes faz lembrar a cena thrash de tão furiosa que soa, uma sonoridade épica evocativa de grandes feitos ou aquelas harmoniosas escalas de guitarra, não esquecendo a tão aclamada balada épica.
Mike não inventou a roda mas também não se limitou a solos bonitos para embelezar o seu trabalho, apenas pegou na essência do rock/metal no seu estado mais puro e revestiu-os de intemporalidade musical mostrando, desta forma, que além de virtuoso músico é também um compositor de excelência. O resultado final é algo que lançado o ano passado, há uma década atrás ou daqui a alguns anos será sempre atual, algo que se poderia classificar como revivalismo contemporâneo atemporal. Mike encontra-se a trabalhar no próximo álbum intitulado "Pawn and Prophecy", veremos se soará tão bom ou melhor que este.

Best known by his work as a bass player in North-American band Symphony X, Mike appears here with his debut solo album and has the collaboration of Michael Romeo (Symphony X) in the guitar, Alan Tecchio (Hades / Watchtower / Seven Witches) in vocals and "Metal" Mike Chlasciak (Halford / Testament / Sebastian Bach) in the guitar, being he in charge of the bass and rhythm guitar. With this said I don’t even know where to begin with so many good things to say! Well, speaking of vocals Alan is superb with his strong and melodic voice capable of achieving acute higher notes, is a mix of Rob Halford, Tim Owens and Bruce Dickinson. The guitar solos, divided between "Metal" Mike and Michael Romeo are not from this world with both showing virtuosity and mastery. Lyrics are about mythological, historical and literature subjects, accompanied by musical structures that cover a wide range of sub-genres in metal that go from folk to classic, epic, power and heavy. For those who thought that Mike was going to do solo “more the same”, maintaining the neoclassical and progressive style typical of him, got it all wrong; the bet is totally power metal and classical heavy metal. In fact, we just need to listen to the album’s opening track “Apocalypse Rider” to be soon hit by a wave of revival and nostalgia of the golden age of metal. But this work goes beyond that, congregating in itself the essence of the classics: drums that sometimes resemble the thrash scene due to their furious sounding, an epic sonority evocative of great deeds or those harmonic guitar scales, not forgetting the so claimed epic ballad.
Mike didn’t invented the wheel but he also didn’t resign to beautiful solos just so his work would look good, he simply picked up the essence of rock/metal in her purest state and covered it with musical timelessness,, this way showing that besides being a virtuoso musician he’s also an excellent composer. The final result is something that released last year, a decade ago few years from now will always be modern, something that could easily be called as timeless contemporary revivalism. Mike is currently working on his sophomore named "Pawn and Prophecy", let’s see if it will sound as good or better than this one.
