Sons Ov Omega - Reign

When Tiamat Invictuz and Arktos came together in 2012 to form Sons Ov Omega they’re mind was certainly focused in creating music able to highlight itself in the scene; to help them in this endeavor they were joined by Mors, Anthropos and Malocchio. The result is available since February in the form of a debut album named “Reign”. Due to the number of influences each member brought to the band their first concern was to find a common ground that could define their sound, musical vision and paths to follow. Because all of them are fascinated by the thematic of death and annihilation, their lyrics focus on deities, tales and mythologies of the apocalypse; in musical terms it’s a little bit hard to pinpoint a specific gender for them because the grounds they step on are very wide…

Right on the first track “Pandora” we became certain to be on the presence of musicians who know what they’re doing; the way they blend a death/black sonority in an epic track that not only presents us with calm passages but afterwards hits us with those heavy guitars accompanied by demolishing drums, with a voice alternating between gloomy and intense reveal the intense work they’ve been developing in the past five years (since they got together as a band). Sometimes the first music shows great potential that starts vanishing in the next ones but in this case it’s the opposite; “Fields Of Ember” chooses a death pace under an occultist environment with the same dark demonic aura where we start perceiving that Anthropos’ timbre fits perfectly well in the chosen thematic almost reaching an epic level in “Quetzalcoatl”, one of the tracks that combines aggressiveness and epicness perfectly. “Nuclear Salvation” has an oriental touch (subliminal message, maybe…) and a very appealing sonority with catchy riffs and astonishing hooks, in a track where the major stars are undoubtedly the guitars, here in great style. With a more death/doom pace well appropriate to the judgment of the Inquisition, “Malleus Maleficarum” satirizes in a severe way this period of Man’s History, followed by “Kali” that acts as a purifying fire purge driven by the strong paced guitars, in the end subtly pinching black metal. “BrainWave Zero” starts with a demolishing guitar solo opening for a mainly thrash song; as if this wasn’t enough this song also includes a prog solo. The guitars create another apotheotic entrance in the dark “The Tempest”, pending more to black but pillared in a complex musical structure resembling more to a dark melodic metal. “Deluge” is that one track that points out due to its highlighted sonority; I’m not saying that it’s the best track in the album but its musical structure detaches from the others with a strong attachment to progressive reminding Opeth. “Dreams Of A Sunken City...(Intro)” is just that, a small introductory track to “Cthulhu”; with a paced rhythm resembling Greek band Rotting Christ’s black metal, this track gathers all the characteristics that make this an extraordinary album of black darkness adoration.

“Reign” is an album that amazes me; no matter how many epithets I come up or sub-genres I try to include them, the truth is that they would err on default such is the final quality. This is beyond any doubt one of this year’s major releases in its genre, who knows maybe the best, and it only credits me to what I’ve been saying for some time now: there’s something in the water these Swedish drink that makes so damn good in creating extreme music.
