Talking With Embryo About "A Step Beyond Divinity"

E: Obrigado pelas tuas palavras.

Esses cornos sempre bem levantados!

After several positive reviews from around the globe (including ours) about Italian Embryo’s newest work “A Step Beyond Divinity”, it’s time to know more about it and the band itself.

Davi: Hello Embryo and welcome to my blog.
Embryo: Hi Davi, thank you for your interest in the band, it’s a pleasure to be here.

D: First of all, introduce yourselves to Portuguese audience.
E: Embryo was born in 2000, at that time we were all very young, we didn't know the direction that our music would have followed in the future, but we wanted to play death metal for sure; that was the only thing we knew. During the years we changed many people until 2006 when the “actual nucleus” of the band was filled with the entrance of our keyboards player that helped us focus on the direction we wanted to follow. After his entrance our evolution accelerated and brought us to record 3 albums, “No God Slave” (2010), the self-titled “Embryo” (2015) and the last “A Step Beyond Divinity” (2017). The actual line-up has been completed after the recording of the album with the entrance of our new bass player Danilo, so now the Embryo line-up is: Roberto (vocals), Eugenio (guitars), Simone (keyboards), Enea (drums) and Danilo (bass). During these years we tried to reach as much people as possible so we played in almost every country in Western Europe and also some countries in the Eastern and we received very good feedback's everywhere, sharing the stage with many big and huge metal bands.

D: “A Step Beyond Divinity” is a conceptual album based on the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci. Being yourself Italians, was it the main reason for that choice or there’s something else behind?
E: For sure being Italians is the main reason for choosing Leonardo; he’s one of the most famous artists of all time and one of the most famous Italians in the world, but he’s been much more than just an artist and his character so “complex” attracted us. Trying to talk about such a HUGE personality was a great challenge for us and pushed the band to give all the best to pay homage to Leonardo.

D: After listening “A Step Beyond Divinity” a couple of times and compare it with some older songs is clear that you have a more mature sound, heavier and melodic. Is this the result of a natural evolution as a band or a new path to follow?
E: Thank you for your words. As a band we never seated around a table talking about the direction our music should have followed, it’s not in our chords, the risk of losing spontaneity and the impact that a death metal band must have is too high. The new album is the result of all the musical experiences and influences that we embraced in the last years and we see it as an evolution of our “classical” sound, I mean, listening to “A Step Beyond Divinity” you can find all the typical trademarks of our music (rhythmical, vocals, keyboards atmospheres…), but we introduced new elements that opened different possibilities to the future of our music.

D: For this work you had the collaboration of experienced musicians; what does that represent for the band? Is something to repeat in future releases?
E: Working with great people/artists/musicians is always positive and gives you the chance to grow and improve, so this is absolutely a plus for us all. The experience has been very good so it’s not an option that we want to reject, with the right people…

D: You already know my opinion but I want to know yours; how do you see this release and all the hype surrounding it?
E: We are all completely satisfied with it! It’s the result of a really hard work we made, musically and lyrically. We introduced new elements and a different way of thinking about the realization of the album; it’s the first time we worked on a kind-of-concept album so we already knew what the lyrics should talk about; this means that the music itself should be in the same mood of the lyrics and this is exactly the opposite of the way we used to work on songs. It’s very satisfying reading so many people enthusiast about our album and many people understanding all the work behind its release, it means we reached the point and it’s really amazing.

D: I just wish to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. I always leave the last one for the interviewed to speak freely; it’s your time, use it.
E: Thanks to you for giving us this opportunity. We just want to tell to all the people reading this to keep on supporting the underground music and not stopping to be curious about bands you don’t know, they could be a great surprise. See you soon on the road for the promotion of our new album and to share some time together. Always horns up!
