Talking with Jesus Pinilla from Universal Theory

Criado em 2011, Universal Theory é um projecto musical que combina vários estilos musicais que vão do rock ao metal, progressivo, gótico, electro, atmosférico e outros. Com dois álbuns já editados a banda começa a ganhar o respeito dos media e fãs. Acho que é tempo para Jesus Pinilla, o mentor deste projecto, nos falar um pouco mais dele e do seu trabalho.

Davi: Olá Jesus, sê bem-vindo ao meu blogue e obrigado por despenderes tempo para falares do teu trabalho.

Jesus: Olá! É com enorme prazer que estou aqui hoje.

Davi: Vamos começar pelo estilo musical. Apesar de combinares elementos de vários géneros o foco principal vai para o gótico. É o teu favorito?

J: Eu não tenho um estilo preferido mas o metal é um dos meus favoritos bem como melodias negras de pendor gótico. Mas também ouço outros estilos tais como jazz, blues, OST e outros. Adoro a mistura entre o metal com passagens de toque negro e melodias profundas.

D: Ainda sobre o gótico, ambas vocalizações (tua e da María) encaixam na perfeição neste subgénero. Outra razão para apostarem numa abordagem mais gótica?

J: Sim. Quando compões tens de considerar todas as possibilidades, como funciona a tua sonoridade sem enveredares por uma exploração de outras áreas e tentares criar novos sons, novas atmosferas.

D: “Mistery Timeline” em 2013 e “The Most Attractive Force” em 2015. Quão boa tem sido a reacção do público ao teu trabalho?

J: Até agora a resposta do público tem sido fantástica. Felizmente continuámos a receber muito bom feedback por parte do público e também muito boas análises.

D: Em “The Most Attractive Force” fizeste algumas mudanças: se por um lado temos guitarras mais pesadas e uma toada mais progressiva, por outro sinto ali uma aura ambiente mais “doom” em algumas partes. Porquê?

J: Sim, o novo álbum tem guitarras mais pesadas que são mais de acordo com as minhas raízes. Para além disso tem também uma sonoridade mais intensa em relação ao trabalho de estreia. Outro dos motivos para isso acontecer são as emoções do momento, por outras palavras, o que sentes quando estás a compor.

D: No teu perfil do BandCamp afirmas que “as letras são inspiradas por experiências pessoais e pensamentos”. Cada música funciona como um reflexo do seu criador mas, neste caso, deveríamos ver a música como um reflexo do teu eu interior?

J: Costumo dizer que acredito que antes de começares a escrever uma música precisas de ter um motivo para tal e cada uma delas conta uma estória, um pensamento, desejos, um dia ou uma experiência da minha vida que eu tento transmitir através das letras e da música. Nesse sentido sim, a minha música reflecte o meu eu interior.

D: Agora sobre o futuro, vais manter Universal Theory como projecto de estúdio ou pretendes também tocar ao vivo?

J: Eu adoro música e pretendo continuar a criar novas canções e estou a começar a pensar em encontrar músicos com quem tocar… realmente mal posso esperar por tocar ao vivo mas aqui em Espanha não é fácil encontrar músicos que apreciem este estilo musical.

D: Mantendo-nos no futuro, 2017 está quase aí. Podemos esperar um novo trabalho de modo a manter o hiato de 2 anos entre lançamentos?
J: Esperemos que sim. Vou agora começar a trabalhar e a compor para um novo registo portanto lá para o final de 2017…

D:  Tempo para uma última questão. Deixo sempre esta em aberto para os meus convidados poderem falar abertamente. Mais uma vez obrigado pelo teu tempo; o palco é teu.

Created in 2011, Universal Theory is a musical project that combines various musical styles, from rock to metal, progressive, Goth, electro, atmosphere and more. With two albums released so far, the band is gaining the respect from the media and fans. I think it’s time for Jesus Pinilla, the mentor of this project, to tell us more about him and his work.

Davi: Hello Jesus, welcome to my blog and thank you for taking the time to talk about your work.

Jesus: Hello there! It is a big pleasure to be here today.

D: Let’s start by the musical style. Despite you combine elements from several genres you main focus is on Goth tunes. Is it your favorite?

J: I don´t have a favorite style but Metal is one of my favorite styles and also dark Goth melodies. But I listen to different music styles such as Jazz, Blues, OST and more. I love the mix between Metal with dark passages and deep melodies.

D: Again about Goth, both vocals (yours and María) fit quite well in that genre. Another reason for keeping in a more Goth approach?

J: Yes. When you compose you must consider your possibilities, how your sound works without leaving to explore other areas and try to create new sounds, new atmospheres.

D: “Mystery Timeline” in 2013 and “The Most Attractive Force” in 2015. How well is the public reacting to your work?

J: People’s response has been great so far. Fortunately we are continually receiving very good feedback from the public and also very good reviews.

D: In “The Most Attractive Force” you did some changes: on one hand heavier guitars and more progressive tunes but on the other hand I sense more “doomish” ambience in some parts. Why?

J: Yes, the new album has a heavier sound with louder guitars, more in accordance with my roots. Also it has a more intense sound in comparison with the debut album. Another reason for it are the emotions of the moment, in other words, depending how you feel then will be your compositions.

D: In your Bandcamp profile you state that the “lyrics are inspired by personal experiences and thoughts.” Every music resembles his creator but, in this case, should we see your music has a reflection of your inner self?

J: As I usually say I believe that before you write a song you need to have a reason for writing it and each song tells a story, a thought, desires, one day or one experience in my life and I try to transmit it through the lyrics and music. So yes, my music can be seen has a reflection of my inner self.

D: Now about the future, will you keep Universal Theory as a studio project or are you going live as well?

J: I love music and I will continue creating new songs and I am even beginning to think about the possibility of looking for musicians....really, I cannot wait for it but in Spain it is hard to find musicians who like and play this kind of music.

D: Staying in the future, 2017 is just around the corner. Can we expect some new work to maintain the 2 years gap?
J: Hopefully. Now I will start working and recording new songs for the next album so maybe at the end of 2017...
