Desde que comecei a escrever sobre música que tive a oportunidade de falar e conhecer (mesmo que não pessoalmente) muitos músicos oriundos de diversos locais e com bases musicais diversas. Estas conversas tornaram possível aumentar o meu conhecimento musical e alargar o meus gostos e a eles a oportunidade de falarem livremente sobre o seu trabalho/paixão. Recentemente cruzei-me com Max Haze e a conversa invariavelmente teria de ser sobre ele e o seu projecto chamado Psyckadeli. Então para já leiam o que ele disse e depois passem na página a dar uma olhadela, não se vão arrepender.
Davi: Olá Max, bem-vindo ao meu blogue e obrigado pelo tempo dispensado para falarmos sobre Psyckadeli.
Max: Obrigado por me receberes. É sempre bom falar com alguém como tu que tem uma grande devoção à música.
D: Em primeiro lugar explica-nos o que é Psyckadeli.
M: Psyckadeli é uma banda de hard rock moderno que combina sons pesados de guitarra com hipnóticas partes de sintetizador. Com Max Haze a massacrar as cordas da guitarra e Chris Crash a bater nos tambores eles são os pilares da banda. Nós temos um conceito chamado “Protocolo de Apresentação”, o que significa que os nossos vocalista e baixista mudam de canção para canção. Este constante mudar de pessoas representa um novo desafio e frescura. Fazemos isto há já algum tempo e torna-se mais divertido a cada novo músico ou como gostámos de os chamar, PsyckE.
D: Vamos-nos focar nas 2 músicas por vocalista. Qual o motivo por detrás disso, o que vos moveu nesse sentido?
M: Já cá andamos há algum tempo e apenas tivemos um vocalista no passado mas que, por incompatibilidade de objectivos, decidimos cada um seguir o seu caminho. Enquanto procurávamos uma nova vocalista percebemos que era difícil encontrar alguém com os mesmos objectivos, cantasse bem e tivesse disponibilidade. Mas para projectos curtos as pessoas têm sempre tempo, ele só têm de fazer a parte divertida! Para nós é uma excelente forma de trabalhar com músicos habilidosos mesmo que tenham compromissos com as suas bandas. Isto dá um toque diferente, uma nova abordagem a cada canção e expande a nossa base de fãs.
D: Tu e o Chris criam as músicas e depois procuram alguém para as preencher? Ou primeiro procuram alguém e depois em conjunto compõem? Como funcionam as coisas?
M: Até agora escrevemos nós as músicas, comigo a tratar dos instrumentos e o Chris a tratar das letras. Em seguida escolhemos as vozes de acordo com o que escrevemos mas, no futuro, queremos convidar pessoas para uma maior colaboração. É diferente se tivermos mais pessoas envolvidas e a preocuparem-se com a canção.
D: Cada um de vocês tem diferentes bases musicais e a cada músico com que trabalham obviamente ficam com mais áreas para cobrir. Não crês vir a perder alguma “identidade” e a tua música derivar constantemente? Isso não dificultaria a que fosses conhecido por este ou aquele estilo?
M: Eu acho que este conceito é parte da nossa identidade e vê-mo-lo como uma força. Diferentes pessoas e experiências permitem-nos criar algo que de outro modo não seria possível, além de que muitas grandes canções nascem da colaboração. E eu e o Chris vamos sempre manter as nossas bases na nossa música. Actualmente há muitos músicos a fazer algo do género mas não neste estilo. Tocar ao vivo também se torna uma experiência interessante com todos aqueles cantores e permite múltiplas gravações ao vivo.
D: Eu reparei que, no vosso site, vocês disponibilizam links para descarregarem as vossas canções. Vocês pretendem gravar um CD? Em caso afirmativo, toda esta “acção benemérita” não vai prejudicar as vendas?
M: É muito provável que venhamos a ter um CD em suporte físico quando tivermos canções suficientes. Dado que fazemos uma história em torno de cada PsyckE com que trabalhámos vamos continuar a disponibilizar música a música. O nosso objectivo é espalhar as nossas canções o mais possível até porque acreditámos que, desta forma, logo que consigamos fãs acérrimos eles certamente nos irão apoiar.
D: Bem Max, mais uma vez obrigado pelo teu tempo. Eu geralmente deixo a última “questão” em aberto para que os meus entrevistados possam falar abertamente. E no vosso caso ia pedir algo diferente; como vocês gostam tanto de vídeos, que tal criarem uma espécie de “vídeo mensagem” para os nossos leitores? Que dizem?

Since I started writing about music I had the opportunity to talk and meet (even if not in person) many musicians from various origins and musical grounds. These conversations made it possible for me to expand my knowledge and taste in music and also granted them a chance to speak freely about their work/passion. Recently, Max Haze and I crossed paths which invariably resulted in a conversation about him and his project called Psyckadeli. So for now just read what he has to say about it and later give it a look, you won’t regret it.
Davi: Hello Max, welcome to my blog and thank you for having the time to talk about Psyckadeli.
Max: Thanks for having me. It’s always nice to talk to somebody like yourself that has a big devotion for music.
D: First of all, tell us what Psyckadeli’s all about.
M: Psyckadeli is a modern hard rock band that mixes up their heavy guitar sounds with hypnotic synth parts. With Max Haze smacking the guitar and Chris Crash beating up the drums they are the foundation of the band. We have a concept called ”Featuring Protocol” which means that our singer and bass player change from song to song. This ever-changing set of people always challenges you with something new and fresh. We’ve been doing this for a while now and it gets more fun with every new musician, or PsyckE, as we call them.
D: Let’s focus on the 2 songs per singer. What is the motive behind it, what drove you in that direction?
M: We’ve been around for a while and had only one singer before but due to lack of common goals we decided to part ways. When looking for a new female singer we realised that finding someone who has a common goal, sing well and have the time is difficult. But shorter projects people always have time for, they get to do only the fun part! For us it’s a great way to work with skilled musicians even though they might already be busy with a band of their own. That brings a different touch, a new story every time and expands our fan base.
D: You and Chris create the songs and then search for others to fill it? Or you choose first who will accompany you and then all together compose? How does it work?
M: Until now, we have written the songs ourselves with me doing the instrumental parts and Chris doing the lyrics. We have then chosen our singers based on the songs we have but we would like to invite people to collaborate more in the future. It is a different thing to get people more involved and starting to care for the song.
D: Each of you has different musical bases and by inviting other musicians obviously you’ll have a lot of ground to cover. Don’t you think you can lose some “identity” and musically derive over and over again? Wouldn’t that make it difficult for you to be know by this or that style?
M: I think that this concept is part of our identity as a band and we see it as a strength. Different backgrounds and different people let us creating something that we couldn’t have done otherwise and most great songs are based on collaborations. And me and Chris will always continue to keep the base in our music. Actually there are many musicians that do this already today but not in this genre. Playing live will make it even more interesting by having a number of singers along and also make things like live recordings from live sets.
D: I’ve noticed in your site that you give download links to the songs. Do you intend to record a CD? If so, wouldn’t this “well deserving action” prejudice your sellings?
M: It is likely that we will make a physical CD when we have enough songs available. Since we make a story around every PsyckE we will continue to release songs one by one. Our intention is to spread our music as much as possible and we believe this is the way, as soon as we get die hard fans they will want to support us anyway.
D: Well Max, again thank you for your time. I usually leave the last “question” open for my interviewers can freely speak. And in your case I’ll ask for something different; because you like videos I was hoping you could make a “video message” for the ones reading this. What do you say?
