Talking with Spanish band In.Verno

Há cerca de 2 anos atrás fiz a análise ao álbum “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” dos Espanhóis In.Verno. Agora, numa altura em que preparam o seu novo trabalho, achei que seria uma boa altura para conversar com a banda sobre este assunto, as mudanças no seio da mesma e a presença no Laurus Nobilis Music Fest 2017.

Davi: Olá a todos, obrigado por terem aceite o meu convite para uma conversa sobre os In.Verno.

Fran: Obrigado nós a ti Davi pela oportunidade que nos dás e por todo o apoio que dás à cena underground de Portugal e Espanha.

D: Vamos começar pelo novo trabalho; o anterior “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” era conceptual, este também será assim ou vai ser mais livre em termos de narrativa?

Xan: O álbum ainda está numa fase inicial de desenvolvimento e ainda é muito cedo para se tomar uma decisão dessas. Já temos o conceito e agora há que desenvolve-lo, mas de uma maneira distinta do anterior.

D: Saíram Laura Comesaña (vocalista), Jorge (bateria) e Enrique (teclados), em que medida é que isso afetou (ou não) o processo criativo da banda?

X: Numa banda como a nossa, em que a composição envolve toda a gente, qualquer mudança afetará sempre o resultado final. Não é algo preocupante já que a música reflete as diferentes sensibilidades musicais de cada elemento da banda. Por isso este novo trabalho vai ser uma agradável surpresa para todos, até mesmo para nós.
F: Por outro lado o timbre de voz da Laura e da Elizabeth (Eli) são diferentes. Posso dizer que nos novos temas estamos a aproveitar ao máximo a voz de soprano da Eli. O Dani é um grande músico jazz que estudou no ESMAE (Porto); a sua forma de entender o metal é completamente diferente da nossa, algo que sem dúvida se reflete nas novas músicas.

Elisabeth: No início foi um pouco complicado conseguir interpretar alguns temas. A Laura e eu temos timbres opostos, assim como técnicas de canto. Mas com trabalho árduo foi possível manter a essência do “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity”.

D: A integração de Elizabeth Siren e Daniel Diaz Fentanes foi fácil?

X: Sim. São duas pessoas maravilhosas e músicos de grande categoria e isso fez com que as coisas se tornassem fáceis logo desde o início.
E: Pessoalmente posso dizer que fui uma felizarda por a banda me ter recebido de braços abertos. Desde a primeira altura que têm sido muito amáveis e feito tudo para que seja possível levar as coisas a bom porto.

Daniel: É fácil quando se é bem recebido.

F: São duas pessoas encantadoras que deram tudo para que fosse possível retomarmos a nossa tournée e tornaram a composição dos novos temas uma tarefa mais fácil.

D: Outra novidade foi passarem a trabalhar com uma promotora, a Mantícora. Isso foi resultado do crescente sucesso ou, pelo contrário, foi para impulsionar o vosso crescimento?

X: Foi um pouco de ambas. “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” funcionou como um grande empurrão na nossa carreira e fez-nos crescer como banda. Foi nesse momento importante da nossa carreira que o pessoal da Mantícora apareceu e esperamos que essa sinergia nos faça crescer ainda mais.

D: Têm dado alguns concertos, maioritariamente em Espanha, e muitos mais certamente se seguirão. Mas vou destacar apenas o Laurus Nobilis, aonde vocês vão atuar num evento que vai contar também com nomes que são uma inspiração para vocês; refiro-me aos Heavenwood e Amorphis. Como se sentem quanto a isso e qual a importância para o vosso percurso musical?

X: É um orgulho poder tocar com bandas do calibre de Amorphis e Heavenwood. Têm sido referências para nós desde que começámos a tocar e estamos muito animados com esse evento.

F: Para nós é o realizar de um objectivo poder pisar o palco de um festival da importância do Laurus Nobilis, ainda para mais com um cartaz incrível como o desta edição. Somos frequentadores assíduos dos festivais Portugueses desde há muitos anos e agrada-nos tudo o que os envolve, desde a organização ao ambiente, as bandas e, claro, a gastronomía.

D: Voltando ao novo trabalho, já há data definida para sair?

X: Ainda não, estamos a preparar os temas e não nos queremos apressar.

F: A nossa ideia passa por nos despedirmos do nosso querido “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” de forma merecida com a nossa “Insanity Tour”, para depois nos dedicarmos a 100% à criação do novo trabalho.

D: Espero que incluam Portugal na rota da tournée…
X: Naturalmente que sim. Seria um enorme prazer voltar a terras Portuguesas onde a cultura do metal conta com inúmeros festivais e salas importantes.

F: Os nossos corações são 50% Galegos e 50% Portugueses, iremos com todo o prazer a Portugal as vezes que forem necessárias.

D: Mais uma vez obrigado pelo vosso tempo, aproveitem para deixar uma mensagem da banda para quem ler este texto.

About 2 years ago I reviewed the album “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” from Spanish band In.Verno. Now, when they are preparing their new album, I thought it would be a good time to talk with them about this subject, the changes that occurred in the band and their presence in this years’ edition of Laurus Nobilis Music Fest.

Davi: Hello all, thank you for accepting my invitation to a conversation about In.Verno.

Fran: Thank you Davi, for the opportunity you give us and all your support to Portugal and Spanish underground scene.

D: Let’s begin with the new work; the previous “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” was conceptual, will this new work be also or will it be free, in terms of story?

Xan: The album is yet in an embryo phase so it’s too early to make a decision like that. We already have the concept and now we need to work on it but in a different way of the previous one.

D: Laura Comesaña (vocals), Jorge (drums) e Enrique (keyboards) left the band, in what way did this affected (or not) the band’s creative process?

X: In a band like ours, where the composition process involves everyone, any change will always have an effect in the outcome. It’s not of too much concern because the music reflects different musical sensations from each band member. That’s why this new work will be a pleasant surprise to everyone, even to ourselves.
F: On one hand, Laura and Elizabeth (Eli) timbers are different. I can say that in the new songs we are exploring the most of Eli’s sopranos voice. Dani is a great jazz musician who studied at ESMAE (Oporto); his way of understanding metal is totally different from ours, which is something that undoubtedly reflects in our songs.
Elisabeth: In the beginning it was a little bit hard to interpret some of the songs. Laura and I have opposite timbres, same as singing techniques. But with hard work was possible to maintain the essence of “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity”.

D: Was Elizabeth Siren and Daniel Diaz Fentanes integration in the band easy?

X: Yes. They are two wonderful people and high quality musicians and that made things easier right from the beginning.
E: I can personally say I was lucky in having the band welcomed me with open arms. Since the beginning they have been very kind and made everything they could to make things work out well.
Daniel: It’s easier when we are welcome.
F: They are two charming people who gave everything to make it possible for us to return to our tour and made the song composition process more simpler.

D: You now work with a promoter, Mantícora. Was this a result of your growing success or, on the contrary, was to promote the band even further?

X: It was a little bit of both. “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” turned out to be a great push in our career and made us grow as a band. It was in that important moment of our career that guys form Mantícora showed up and we hope all this synergy can help us to grow stronger.

D: You have been given a few concerts, mainly in Spain, and many more will surely follow. But I will just highlight Laurus Nobilis, where you’ll play in a gig with names that are an inspiration to you; I’m referring to Heavenwood and Amorphis. How do you feel about it and what the importance in your musical path?

X: It’s a privilege to play with bands as great as Amorphis and Heavenwood. They’ve been our references since we started playing and we are thrilling with this gig.
F: For us it's a fulfillment of an objective to be able to step on a stage as important has Laurus Nobilis, even more with such an incredible poster as this year’s edition. We are regular attendants of Portuguese festivals since a few years back and it pleases us all that relates to them, from organization to the environment, the bands and, of course, the gastronomy.

D: Again about the new work, is there a release date scheduled?

X: Not yet, we are still preparing the songs and we are taking our time.
F: Our goal is to say goodbye to our beloved “The Reasonable Choice of Insanity” the way it deserves with our “Insanity Tour”, so afterwards we can dedicate ourselves 100% to the new album.

D: I really hope you include Portugal in your tour...
X: We will certainly do. It would be an enormous pleasure returning to Portuguese places where metal culture has inumerous festivals and important venues.
F: Our hearts are 50% Galician and 50% Portuguese, with pleasure we’ll travel to Portugal as many times as needed.

X: Thank you Davi for all the support you’re giving us. I would like to congratulate, from the bottom of my heart, all Portuguese people for their musical taste and cultural in general and for the opportunity they give to their Galician neighbours to enjoy it.
