This Broken Machine - [Departures]

Há bandas que não me cativam logo, só depois de ouvir algumas vezes acabam por entrar no ouvido; outras há que logo na primeira música despertam curiosidade aumentando a vontade de querer ouvir mais. Os Italianos This Broken Machine enquadram-se no segundo grupo depois de me terem convidado a escutar “Departing”, primeira faixa e single de lançamento do seu segundo álbum “[Departures]”, a sair no próximo dia 23 de Março.

A história de “[Departures]” gira em torno de decisões que tomamos ao longo da nossa vida e que acabam por moldar o nosso carácter. Nem sempre fazemos as melhores escolhas e isso reflete-se também neste trabalho. Depois de ouvir algumas vezes o álbum voltei por momentos ao passado, ao álbum de estreia “The Inhuman Use Of Human Beings“ para perceber de que modo este hiato de 6 anos poderia ter influenciado a banda. Há algo que mantêm, um lirismo voltado para temas fracturantes da sociedade; outra característica positiva é o correto uso das vocalizações limpas e guturais, suaves ou com raiva, aplicadas de acordo com a letra e/ou o momento, servindo para dar mais ênfase à mensagem ao mesmo tempo que se tornam parte integrante da composição, como que se a sua dissociação da música a torna-se vazia. No que se refere à composição e musicalidade nota-se uma melhoria entre os dois álbuns; não é fácil rotular o seu som devido ao grande número de influências que usam na composição, tão depressa temos uma guitarra a solar um lamento (“As You Fall”), uma passagem mais ambiente (“Distant Stars”) ou um toque de thrash (“This Grace”). A banda combina muito bem todas as suas influências numa toada progressiva com guitarras e baixo audíveis e bem acompanhados por uma bateria forte, juntando as vocalizações fortes que dão às músicas um espectro triste e alguma raiva mas paradoxalmente resultando em composições que, apesar de down e mid tempo projetam uma energia positiva que, atendendo à mensagem do lirismo, acaba por trazer algum alento e esperança. É como se os This Broken Machine fizessem música para exorcizar demónios interiores e o resultado fosse a panaceia necessária.

“[Departures]” mostra uma banda adulta e que soube evoluir desde a sua estreia, aproveitando bem a longa pausa para refinar a sua sonoridade. A forma como passam mensagens tristes de forma melodiosa é sem dúvida a sua marca e algo a manter pois é através dela que conseguem demarcar-se na cena. Um álbum recomendado aos amantes de música melodiosa de peso.

There are bands that don’t capture my attention right away, only after listening to them a few times they end up sounding good to my ears; other are that right on the first song arouse my curiosity and make me want to listen some more. Italians This Broken Machine fit on the second group after inviting me to listen to “Departing”, sophomore “[Departures]” first track and release single to be released next March 23rd.

The history in “[Departures]” circles around the decisions we make along our life and end up shaping our character. We not always make the best choices and that is reflect also in this work. After listening to the album a few times for a while I went back to the past, to the debut album “The Inhuman Use Of Human Beings“ so I could perceive how this 6 years hiatus could have had some influence in the band. There’s something they keep, lyrics about society’s rupture topics; other positive characteristic is the correct use of clean and guttural vocals, soft or enraged, applied accordingly with the lyrics and/or with the moment suited to emphasize the message at the same time they become an all with the composition, as if its dissociation with the music makes it hollow. Regarding the composition and musicality we can notice an improvement in this album; it’s not easy to label their sound due to the high number of influences they use in their compositions, one time we listen to a weeping guitar solo (“As You Fall”), a more ambiance passage (“Distant Stars”) or a twitch of thrash (“This Grace”). The band mixes all their influences pretty well in a progressive pace with guitars and bass perfectly audible and well accompanied by strong drums, adding strong vocals that give a sad spectrum and some rage but paradoxically end up with songs that, although more down and mid tempo, project a positive energy which meeting the message in the lyrics end up bringing some breath and hope. It’s as if This Broken Machine made music to exorcise inner demons and the result was the necessary panacea.

“[Departures]” shows a mature band who knew how to evolve since its debut, taking advantage of a long pause to refine their sonority. The way they pass sad messages in a melodic way is undoubtedly their trademark and something to keep because is through it that they can demarcate themselves in the scene. A recommended album for the ones who love heavy melodic music.
