Tument - Overmass

Striped from labels, forged in the depths of chaos and destructions that surrounds us and willing to create a landmark in the Portuguese extreme music scene; I do believe this short definition should be enough to show what “Overmass” will bring us at the end of this year.

Although you think this is a newer band, in fact Tument are a project that saw the light of day in 2007 at the time under the name ENTRopia. After the departure of some members and the arrival of newer ones, in 2014 they decide to start preparing their debut album and change the name to Tument; 3 years after “Overmass” appears, curious fact it is edited and promoted by Fatsound.productions, company owned by ENTRopia’s former bassist, Rstein.

The use of labels is usual to better fit a bands’ sonority but in this case it’s not easy (nor advisable at the risk of losing its essence). The influences are perfectly listenable , we can ear a series of blast beats usual in black metal, the rhythm varies between the slow pace of black/doom (“For a Lie”) to the frenzy death/black present in all tracks, we can even describe some parts of “Why” as post or prog black; the combined vocals of growlings, screams and clean voices help creating a better projection of the message in the lyrics besides contributing to a create a better image, sometimes assuming some sort of dialog between Good and Evil. The compositions show there was caution in structuring all the different elements which results in a balance between weight and aggressiveness, all under a strong technical component that covers all the album.

“Overmass” took its time to compose but is was worth it, resulting in 6 tracks that reflect well the essence of extreme music without the need of unjustified exacerbation. Marks not only the return to the scene of a band that still has a lot to give but it’s also an example of the quality of the catalog that begins taking form in Fatsound.productions.
