Vagos Metal Fest 2017 - Day 3

O terceiro e último dia desta segunda edição do Vagos Metal Fest aparentava ser o dia com menor afluência de público em relação aos anteriores, mas ainda assim com o recinto a apresentar-se muito bem composto para receber as últimas bandas do evento.

Com o forte calor que se sentia ao início da tarde de domingo, quando os thrashers Espanhóis Reaktion subiram ao palco ainda eram poucos os que os aguardavam. Graças a uma entrada a todo o gás isso rapidamente se alterou com o número a aumentar para os primeiros circle pits da tarde; boa estreia para uma jovem banda.

Os Attick Demons apresentaram um alinhamento que alternava entre o estreante “Atlantis” e o novo “Let’s Raise Hell”. Um dos porta-estandartes do power metal Nacional deu um bom concerto (aliás não se esperava menos que isso) perante uma plateia de onde se destaca o grande número de Espanhóis com camisolas da banda, sinónimo de reconhecimento além-fronteiras.

De regresso a Vagos passados 7 anos, os Miss Lava subiram ao palco com pujança e força de vontade. Com maior destaque para o muito aclamado álbum “Sonic Debris” de 2016, o quarteto Lisboeta mostrou também um tema do novo EP “Dominant Rush” numa atuação meritória onde mostraram a qualidade do seu stoner rock musculado e electrizante.

Os norte-Americanos Chelsea Grin trouxeram a Vagos o seu deathcore pesado e arrastado. Por esta altura já era evidente uma maior massa humana e não lhes foi muito difícil por todos a mexer ao som de blast beats, ganchos eletrizantes e riffs arrasadores, transformando o recinto numa espiral de poeira.

Também dos EUA vieram os thrashers Havok. O aquecimento já tinha sido feito com as bandas anteriores por isso era só aproveitar a embalagem, e que embalagem! Caracterizar a sua atuação resume-se a isto: constante crowd surfing num debitar de gente sem fim para o photo pit obrigando mesmo a um reforço de meios para aguentar tamanha avalanche. Atuação irrepreensível, uma das mais movimentadas do evento.

Depois deste frenético momento thrash um regresso ao deathcore, agora pela mãos dos (também) norte-Americanos Whitechapel. Uma das bandas que mais sobressai no género muito por força do som emanado pelo uso de 3 guitarras levou a maioria dos presentes a mais um turbilhão de poeira, apesar de um concerto com pouca empatia; acabou mesmo por terminar muito antes do previsto devido (segundo informações da organização) a um problema com a bateria.

Depois de tanto core e adrenalina temia-se que os Suecos Hammerfall passassem um pouco à margem do evento. Mas a verdade é que se são um dos expoentes mundiais no seu género isso deve-se a forma como encaram os concertos e este foi um dos melhores do VMF. Com uma atuação soberba e muito bem estruturada, tanto a nível sonoro como visual, Joacim Cans e companhia viam a plateia cantar quase todos os temas escolhidos; se tivéssemos de classificar este concerto seria com o epíteto de perfeita simbiose entre banda e público.

O evento aproximava-se do seu final e era notório o cansaço de muitos dos presentes. Felizmente que o problema técnico dos Whitechapel permitiu que os restantes concertos fossem antecipados, levando a que o final se aproximasse de forma mais célere, permitindo o tão merecido descanso. Penúltima banda a atuar, os Canadianos Gorguts; devo dizer que me impressionaram pela positiva com o seu technical death metal, com uma brilhante prestação técnica aliada a uma empatia imensa pelo público, quase dando a entender que estavam ali mais em convívio com do que a tocar para; concerto fantástico!

Chegava a hora do último concerto do evento; a banda escolhida para encerrar foram os (adivinharam, mais uma) norte-Americanos Cough. Da legião que veio de além-mar estes eram os que detinham o som mais característico, com os seus riffs lentos e prolongados a hipnotizar os mais resistentes. Provavelmente a banda que mais se destacava no cartaz pela sua sonoridade não muito habitual neste tipo de eventos, menos ainda para rematar uma tarde extenuante e uma noite que já ia longa.

The third and last day of Vagos Metal Fest 2nd edition appeared to be the one with less audience compared with the previous ones, still the facility had many people ready to welcome the last bands of the event.

When Spanish band Reaktion stepped on stage there were still few people awaiting them due to the strong heat. Thanks to a full speed entrance that rapidly changed with the audience increasing for the first circle pits in the afternoon; good debut for a young band.

Attick Demons presented a setlist that toggled between the debut “Atlantis” and the newest “Let’s Raise Hell”. One of the flagship bands of Portuguese power metal gave a great gig (in fact we wouldn’t expect less than that) before a crowd from where we can highlight the high number of Spanish fans wearing band’ shirts, showing how well they are recognized abroad.

Returning to Vagos after 7 years, Miss Lava got up on stage with guts and will of strength. Moro focused in the most acclaimed “Sonic Debris” from 2016, the quartet from Lisbon played also a new track taken from their newest EP “Dominant Rush” in a worthy gig where they’ve shown the quality of their electrifying and bodied stoner rock.

North-American Chelsea Grin brought to Vagos their heavy and slow paced deathcore. By this time it was notable a bigger crowd and it wasn’t too difficult for the band to put everybody moving at the sound of blast beats, electrifying hooks and demolishing riffs, making the precinct a spiral of dust.

Also from the USA came thrashers Havok. The warm-up had already been made with the previous bands so they just need to go with the flow, and what a ride! Describing their performance can be summed up as this: constant crowd surfing with a never ending flow into the photo pit forcing even to an increase of security to maintain the human flood. Impeccable performance, one of the most lively in all event.

After this frantic thrash moment a return to deathcore now by the hands of (also) north-Americans Whitechapel. One of the bands that highlights the most in the genre, mostly because of their sound emanated from the use of 3 guitars lead the majority of the crowd into another turmoil of dust, although a less emphatic gig; it ended sooner than expected due to a problem with the drums (as stated by the organization).

After so many core and adrenaline we feared that Swedish band Hammerfall could be somewhat ignored. But the truth is if they are one of the best bands in the world in their genre mostly it’s because the way they face their gigs and this was one of the best in VMF. With a superb and well structured performance, both musically and visually, Joacim Cans and company saw the crowd sing along almost all the chosen songs; if we had to classify the gig it would be with the epithet of perfect symbiosis between band and audience.

The event was heading to its end and was now visible the tiredness in many of the ones there. Fortunately the technical problem with Whitechapel made it possible to anticipate the rest of the concerts making it possible to end it sooner towards the well deserved rest. Second to last band on stage, Canadians Gorguts; I must say they really impressed me positively with its technical death metal, with a brilliant technical performance combined with an immense empathy with the audience, almost as if they were there with them and not to play for them; fantastic gig!

Finally time for the last concert on the event; the chosen band to close were (you guessed, another one) north Americans Cough. From the legion that came overseas thie were the ones with the most characteristic sound, with its slow and long riffs hypnotizing the crowd. Probably the most highlighted band in the poster due to its sonority less conventional for this type of events, even less to act as closing for an extenuating afternoon and a long night.
