Vagos Open Air - Day 1 / Dia 1

Another year that I make presence at Vagos Open Air, an event I consider not only musical but a place of metal meeting, standing out as a meeting point for the fans, not only Portuguese from North to South, but also for the numerous foreigners that visit us. But now let me describe (from my own point of view) what were the 3 days of the festival.

The ones in charge of starting the hostilities were Scar For Life with their Hard/Rock Metal. I confess I was expecting more mainly because I’m a fan of that subgenre but from sound too loud (fewer people attending were stepping back due to the difficulty in being close to the stage) to some flaws in the voice/instruments made the gig sound insipid… Don’t believe it was caused by nervousness of being the first ones but the truth is it didn’t go that well. Hope next time I can listen to some good Rock like the one the band’s accustomed us in their CDs.

From Oporto came Moonshade to show their debut EP “Dream | Oblivion”. I’m suspect when talking about it since I already gave my opinion about their excellent work (can read it here), only lacking to see them live. Despite they are an “unknown band” (as said by Ricardo Pereira), the truth is they gave a hell of a gig; Ricardo’s voice sounded perfect and all the orchestration worked in full; proving it was the easiness the band was conquering the audience with its Melodic Death Metal, track by track, who rewarded with cheers and ovations. Without a doubt one of the best moments of day 1.

First foreign band playing, Swedish Vildhjarta with their Djent similar to Meshugga. Didn’t knew them very well, had only listened some tracks prior watching them so I could get a notion of how they sounded. Truth is it was another band that didn’t pleased me; too much dead time between tracks, some sound flaws (at first couldn’t ever hear the 2nd voice) and, like with the first band, sound too loud. Can’t say they were bad, just think they should have put more vigor. “Normal” concert, just a few circle pits and nothing more.

Following were Heaven Shall Burn. Unfortunately I couldn’t watch them; have to blame Praça.Come and their excellent service for that. Food and attendance were just too good to be wasted… the band must excuse me but I’ll have to watch them some other time. Nevertheless, after talking to others who saw the gig I got the feeling it was a very good one, with good sound quality and band’s strong position.

First big show, Finnish Amorphis in a gig inserted in the 20th anniversary tour of the release of “Tales From The Thousand Lakes”. Album played in full with many parts accompanied by the fans present, the setlist was completed with songs from “Elegy” (“Against Widows”, “My Kantele”, “Better Unborn”) and “The Karelian Isthmus” (“Sign From The North Side”, “Vulgar Necrolatry”). The band considered the driving force of a all generation of young progressive bands showed how to give the fans some good moments.

Closing the first day the Dutch Within Temptation. I must confess I didn’t knew what to expect from them (don’t get me wrong, i’m their fan); i’m talking about the setlist, which ones would they choose. And I did like it, with the majority of the songs taken from the best (to me) band’s albums (”Mother Earth”, “The Silence Force”, “The Heart of Everything”), duets with Tarja Turunen (“What About Us”), Keith Caputo (“What Have We Done Now”), Xzibit (“And We Run”) and a cover for Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness”. Obviously the logistics of bringing all the musicians in the duets is very complicated so the band opts for using vídeos in the back with those musicians while Sharon sings her parts. Some people don’t like it but I’ve seen it at another concert and I believe it works just fine. An headlining band asserting their assets and closing the first night with great energy delighting all present, many of them who went there just to see Within Temptation.

Mais um ano a marcar presença no Vagos Open Air, num evento que considero não só musical como de reunião metaleira, destacando-se como um ponto de encontro para os fãs de Norte a Sul e também para muitos estrangeiros que nos visitam. Mas vamos passar então à descrição (na minha óptica) daquilo que foram os 3 dias do evento.

Quem teve a honra de abrir as hostilidades foram os Scar For Life com o seu Hard Rock/Metal. Confesso que esperava mais até porque sou um fã do género mas desde o som demasiado alto (aos poucos as pessoas a assistirem iam recuando tal a dificuldade em se manterem perto do palco) até a algumas falhas nos instrumentos/voz fizeram com que o concerto soasse algo insípido… Não acredito que fossem os nervos de serem os primeiros mas o que é certo é que não correu muito bem. Espero numa próxima poder escutar bom Rock ao nível que nos habituaram nos CDs.

Do Porto vieram os Moonshade para mostrarem o seu EP de estreia “Dream | Oblivion”. Sou suspeito para falar deles uma vez que já dei a minha opinião sobre o seu excelente trabalho (podem ler aqui), apenas me faltando vê-los ao vivo. Apesar de serem uma “banda desconhecida” (nas palavras de Ricardo Pereira), a verdade é que deram um concerto de grande nível; a voz de Ricardo soava na perfeição e toda a orquestração funcionou em pleno; a prova disso é que a facilidade com que a banda ia conquistando o público, faixa a faixa, com o seu Melodic Death Metal, que retribuia com agrado e ovações. Sem dúvida um dos grandes momentos do primeiro dia do evento.

Primeira banda estrangeira a actuar, os Suecos Vildhjarta com o seu Djent decalcado de Meshugga. Não os conhecia muito bem, tinha apenas escutado algumas faixas antes para ter uma noção do que iria ouvir. A verdade é que foi outra banda que não me agradou: demasiados tempos mortos entre as músicas, algumas falhas no som (no início nem se ouvia a 2ª voz) e, tal como na primeira, som demasiado alto. Não posso classificar de má a sua prestação, apenas acho que deveriam ter aplicado mais garra. Concerto “normal”, a puxar pelos primeiros circle pits da tarde e pouco mais.

De seguida actuaram os Heaven Shall Burn. Infelizmente não pude assistir ao concerto; a “culpa” foi do Praça.Come e do seu excelente serviço. A comida e o atendimento eram demasiado bons para serem desperdiçados… a banda que me desculpe mas vai ter de ficar para uma próxima. Contudo, depois de sondar várias pessoas que assistiram ao seu concerto fiquei com a ideia de ter sido muito bom, tanto a nível de som como de entrega da banda.

Primeiro grande espetáculo da noite, os Finlandeses Amorphis para mais um concerto inserido na tournée de aniversário do álbum “Tales From The Thousand Lakes”. Álbum tocado na íntegra e com muitas partes a serem acompanhadas pelos presentes, o set ficou completo com temas tirados do “Elegy” (“Against Widows”, “My Kantele”, “Better Unborn”) e de “The Karelian Isthmus” (“Sign From The North Side”, “Vulgar Necrolatry”). Aquela que é considerada a banda impulsionadora de toda uma geração de jovens bandas progressivas mostrou que sabe dar bons momentos aos fãs.

A fechar o primeiro dia os Holandeses Within Temptation. Devo confessar que não sabia muito bem o que esperar daqui (não me interpretem mal, sou fã da banda); refiro-me ao alinhamento das musicas, quais iriam ser as escolhidas. E gostei do set apresentado, com temas maioritariamente retirados dos (para mim) melhores álbuns (”Mother Earth”, “The Silence Force”, “The Heart of Everything”), duetos com Tarja Turunen (“What About Us”), Keith Caputo (“What Have We Done Now”), Xzibit (“And We Run”) e a cover para “Summertime Sadness” de Lana Del Rey. Obviamente que a logística de trazer todos os músicos para os duetos é complicada por isso a banda opta por usar vídeos a passar atrás e samples com as vozes dos músicos enquanto Sharon canta as suas partes. Há quem não aprecie mas já tinha presenciado isto noutro concerto em sala e acho que resulta muito bem. Uma banda cabeca-de-cartaz a fazer valer os seus trunfos e a terminar a noite com grande energia para gáudio dos presentes, muitos dos quais se deslocaram lá especificamente para os ver.
