Para alguns pode soar a contrassenso, mas a verdade é que a música mais melancólica e depressiva muitas vezes consegue criar em mim uma sensação de calma que me ajuda a relaxar e a pensar nas coisas de forma diferente. Foi isso que me aconteceu quando comecei a ouvir “Within The Mist Of Sorrow”, o álbum de estreia dos Suecos Vanha.
Logo na primeira faixa “Old Heart Fails” ficámos com a sensação que musicalmente há ali algo mais do que simples melancolia; aquelas primeiras teclas ajudam a criar ambiente para o que se segue, uma faixa com uma toada pesada mas com uma alma imensa onde se destaca o solo de guitarra, não esquecendo os sinos que funcionam como delimitadores de emoções. “Into the Cold Light” começa como o título, fria e melancólica, lentamente aumentando a intensidade musical até se ouvirem as lágrimas do violino, acalmadas por mais um trecho de guitarra. Por esta altura já se tem uma noção do excelente enquadramento da guitarra nas composições, sem dúvida uma marca que os distingue no género. “The Curse” mostra o “outro lado” do duo, em que o uso da voz límpida em nada afeta a lugubridade do ambiente, pelo contrário, acabando mesmo por lhe conferir o toque de tristeza e solidão que faltava até então. “Reaching the End” tem um início poderoso com a guitarra a gritar bem alto, alternando com o toque orquestral sem perder fulgor enquanto mantém a toada tipicamente doom naquela que provavelmente é a melhor faixa do álbum. “Dark Heart” retoma o dueto de vozes,este mais desequilibrado com a voz gutural a abafar completamente a outra, onde mais uma vez se destaca o solo de guitarra. “Desolation” empurra os sentimentos lá para o fundo com o seu ritmo lento e violino triste onde até as guitarras soaram mais pesarosas, terminando depois com o instrumental “The Curse”; se esta faixa já tinha marcado a diferença antes volta agora a fazê-lo, sobressaindo nela toda a atmosfera de desgosto que Jan e Jesse imprimiram a este trabalho.
Sendo este o álbum de estreia Vanha teria de mostrar potencial para agarrar o ouvinte para não correr o risco de ser “mais um” na cena; a meu ver isso foi conseguido sob a forma de ambientes musicais equilibrados e não repetitivos, solos de guitarra que podem muito bem tornar-se na imagem de marca da banda e um excelente uso das vozes limpa e gutural. Já todos sabemos que ao escutarmos uma novidade vinda da Suécia corremos o risco de que seja boa e Vanha não foge ao estereótipo. Só por si isso não lhes dá direito a destaque especial mas a certeza de que estamos na presença de uma banda que vai deixar marca no género.

For some it may sound like nonsense but the truth is that melancholic and depressive music most of the time can create in me a sense of calm that helps me relax and think differently about things. That’s what happened to me when I started listening “Within The Mist Of Sorrow”, Swedish Vanha’s debut album.
Right on the first track “Old Heart Fails” we get the feeling that musically there’s something more than simple melancholy; those first keys strokes help creating an environment to what comes next, a track with a heavy pace but with an immense soul with a focus on the guitar, not forgetting the bells that work as emotional boundaries. “Into the Cold Light” start as the name states, cold and melancholic, slowly increasing musical intensity until we hear tears from the violin, eased by another passage of the guitar. By this time we can have perfect notion of the excellent positioning of the guitar in the compositions, undoubtedly a mark that distinguishes them in the genre. “The Curse” shows “the other side” of the duo, in which the use of a clean voice affects nothing of the environment’s mournfulness, on the contrary, ends up giving it a touch of sadness and loneliness that was missing until then. “Reaching the End” as a powerful beginning with a guitar screaming out loud alternating with the orchestral touch without losing brilliance while maintaining a typical doom pace in what is probably the album’s best track. “Dark Heart” takes over the voices duet, this one sounding unbalanced with the guttural voice totally muffling the other, where once again I highlight the guitar solo. “Desolation” pushes the feeling down below with its slow rhythm and sad violin where even the guitars sounded more sorrowful, ending afterwards with the instrumental track “The Curse”; is this track had already made a difference before it does it again now, jutting out all the atmosphere of grieve that Jan and Jesse imprinted in this work.
Being this the debut, Vanha had to show the potential to grab the listener to prevent the risk of being “another one” in the scene; in my point of view that was achieved in the form of balanced musical ambiance and non repetitive, guitar solos that may well become the band’s trademark and an excellent use of both clean and guttural voices. We all know that by listening to something new deriving from Sweden the risk it will be something good is high and Vanha doesn’t move apart from that stereotype. All by itself that doesn’t grant them the right of special highlight but the certainty that we are in the presence of a band that will leave a mark in the genre.
