Ainda recentemente disse, a propósito de um concerto que assisti e fiz reportagem, que os anos 70 estão mais vivos do que nunca. Agora chegou-me às mãos mais uma pérola que vai lá buscar inspiração, cujo resultado é um trabalho de grande qualidade; falo de “Beyond The Sun”, álbum de estreia dos Canadianos Woodhawk.
A contrariar um pouco o que disse acima a primeira faixa “Beyond The Sun” que dá título ao álbum começa ao estilo rock alternativo mais moderno com uma pitada de post-rock, acabando próximo de Stone Sour. Mas já na “The High Priest” se começam a ouvir as influências pelas quais a banda se rege, com um riff inicial pleno de groove e psicadelismo que imediatamente nos cria na mente uma imagem de longas barbas, cerveja e sol. É notória a influência de clássicos como Black Sabbath até aos mais recentes Red Fang ou The Vintage Caravan, com a banda a criar músicas que nos transportam para o passado mas simultaneamente mantêm uma identidade própria (“Living In The Sand”), com um constante equilíbrio entre a melodia e o peso da modernidade. A contrastar com todo o southern groove que se escuta ao longo do álbum temos uma “Magnetic North” a pender para o doom, esta sim com fortes influências Sabbathianas, uma “A New Hope” que volta a embrenhar-se por caminhos mais alternativos mesclados com progressivo ou uma “Foresee The Future” instrumental que acaba por servir de impulso para um fechar de álbum em grande estilo com “Chrononaut”.
Este trio Canadiano inspirou-se no som clássico da década de 70 e injetou-lhe peso na dose certa para criar músicas de grande qualidade, tudo isso sem se limitarem a copiar mas sim a adaptarem muito bem as suas raízes musicais a uma contemporaneidade que lhes dá, ao mesmo tempo, um toque muito próprio e diferenciador. Ou muito me engano ou vão ser o próximo caso de sucesso na cena…

I recently said, referring to a concert I’ve attended and covered, that the 70’s are more alive than ever. Now came to my hands another pearl that gets inspiration from there which results in a high quality work; I’m talking about “Beyond The Sun”, Canadians Woodhawk debut album.
Countering what I’ve said above the first track “Beyond The Sun” that entitles the album starts with a modern alternative rock approach with a bit of post-rock, ending Stone Sour look alike. But right on “The High Priest” we start listening the influences by which the band rules, with an initial riff full of groove and psychedelic that right away creates in our mind an image of long beards, beer and Sun. It’s obvious the influence of classic bands like Black Sabbath to more recent ones like Red Fang or The Vintage Caravan, with the band creating musics that transport us into the past but at the same time maintain their own identity (“Living In The Sand”), with a constant balance between melody and the weight of modernity. Contrasting all the southern groove we can listen too throughout the album we have a “Magnetic North” pending more into doom, this one with strong Sabbathian influences, a “A New Hope” that again enters into more alternative paths mixed with progressive or a instrumental “Foresee The Future” that end up giving the push to a closing in great style with “Chrononaut”.
This Canadian trio got inspired by the classical sound of the 70’s and injected it with the right dose of weight to create high quality musics, all of this without just copying yet adapting very well their musical roots to a contemporaneity that, at the same time, gives them an unique and distinguished touch. I may be not far from the truth by saying they may well become the next big thing in the scene...
