Wrath Sins - The Awakening

Em 2015 os Wrath Sins lançavam o seu álbum de estreia “Contempt Over The Stormfall” (ler crítica aqui) cujo feedback foi bastante positivo, não só em termos de imprensa especializada como da parte do público que assistiu aos vários concertos promocionais. Dois anos volvidos a banda regressa com novo trabalho, “The Awakening”.

Depois de uma instrumental “Beneath Black Clouds” que começava já a delinear os contornos do que poderíamos esperar das restantes 9 faixas, passámos para uma “Beneath Death’s Lines” que mostra uma clara evolução qualitativa dos Wrath Sins ao nível da composição, uma faixa bem equilibrada entre o peso/velocidade do thrash mais ritmado com o toque de progressivo a que já nos habituaram, fórmula que continuam a utilizar em “Collision” (onde podemos também escutar um belíssimo solo de guitarra). “Fear Of The Unseen” e “Shadows Kingdom” são 2 temas que derivam para um thrash mais rápido e agressivo; esta toada mantém-se em “Silence From Above”, aqui com a particularidade de entre estas duas últimas faixas haver um momento mais mid-tempo que “acalma” um pouco o ritmo e deixa espaço ao ouvinte para usufruir de mais um solo bem conseguido. Logo de seguida somos arrebatados por uma “Strepidant Mist” plena de técnica e que reflete bem o nível técnico e de composição a que a banda chega com este novo trabalho; o simples facto de, do nada, sair um instrumental deste calibre que nos primeiros instantes nos faz crer que estamos na presença de uma música com uma entrada fulgurante mas que mais tarde nos apercebemos ser uma faixa muito bem estrutura, só por si é merecedor de rasgados elogios pela forma como se estrutura em todo o álbum bem como pela composição em si. A faixa que dá título ao álbum é outro daqueles momentos que identificamos logo como sendo Wrath Sins, com uma forte vertente melódica e progressiva que já se começa a estabelecer como marca distintiva da banda; essa imagem continua um pouco em “The Sun Wields Mercy” até chegarmos finalmente a “Unquiet Heart” que fecha este álbum em alta, numa faixa de peso caracterizada por riffs demolidores e uma aura de fúria.

Este “The Awakening” vem comprovar que os Wrath Sins não descansaram à sombra dos louros recolhidos, antes aproveitaram a boa receptividade para perceberem onde poderiam fazer a diferença e mantiveram-se nesse caminho. São uma banda com um futuro promissor pela sonoridade que nos transmitem, um thrash evoluído e trabalhado com requinte.

In 2015 Wrath Sins released their debut “Contempt Over The Stormfall” (read my review here) whose feedback was quite positive, not only by specialized press but also from the public who went to the several promotional concerts. Two years on the band returns with the sophomore “The Awakening”.

After an instrumental “Beneath Black Clouds” that started shaping what we could expect of the other 9 tracks, we pass to a “Beneath Death’s Lines” that shows us a clear qualitative evolution of the band regarding composition, a track well balanced between the weight/velocity of speedy thrash with a touch of progressive they have accustomed us, formula they apply also in “Collision” (where we can also listen to a beautiful guitar solo). “Fear Of The Unseen” and “Shadows Kingdom” are 2 tracks that derive to a more speedy and aggressive thrash; this pace keeps in “Silence From Above”, here with the particularity that between these two tracks there’s a mid tempo moment that “calms down” the rhythm and leaves space for the listener to enjoy another successful solo. Right afterwards we are struck by a “Strepidant Mist” filled with technic and that reflects well the technical level and composition achieved by the band with this work; the simple fact that, out of nowhere, comes an instrumental with this caliber that in the first moments makes us believe we’re in the presence of a song with a dazzling entrance and later we perceive that it’s a well structured track, just by itself is worthy of high praises by the way it shapes in the album and by itself. The track that titles the album is one of those moments we identify immediately as being Wrath Sins, with a strong melodic and progressive approach that is starts being a band’s distinctive mark; that image continues a little in “The Sun Wields Mercy” until we finally reach “Unquiet Heart” that ends the album in a high pace, a track full of weight characterized by demolishing riffs and an aura of fury.

This “The Awakening” comes to prove that Wrath Sins didn’t had time to rest on their oars, yet they took advantage of the good receptivity to understand where could they make a difference and kept on that track. They are a band with a promising future by the sonority they deliver us, an evolved thrash shaped with finesse.
